Microcalorimeter and bolometer model

چکیده
The standard nonequilibrium theory of noise in ideal bolometers and microcalorimeters fails to predict the performance of real devices due to additional effects that become important at low temperature. In this paper we extend the theory to include the most important of these effects and find that the performance of microcalorimeters operating at 60 mK can be quantitatively predicted. We give a simple method for doing the necessary calculations, borrowing the block diagram formalism from electronic control theory. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1559000#

Complex Impedance as a Diagnostic Tool for Characterizing Thermal Detectors
The complex ac impedance of a bolometer or microcalorimeter detector is easily measured and can be used to determine thermal time constants, thermal resistances, heat capacities, and sensitivities. Accurately extracting this information requires an understanding of the electrical and thermal properties of both the detector and the measurement system. We show that this is a practical method for ...
متن کاملTwo Models for Bolometer and Microcalorimeter Detectors with Complex Thermal Architectures
We have developed two analytical models to describe the performance of cryogenic microcalorimeters and bolometers. One of the models is suitable to describe Transition Edge Sensor(TES) detectors with an integrated absorber, the other is suitable for detectors with large absorbers. Both models take into account hotelectron decoupling and absorber decoupling. The differential equations describing...
متن کاملRecent Evolutions of the Microcalorimeter Technique
The microcalorimeter technique continues to be the key technique for the realization of the primary power standards in the high frequency, because at the state of the art, only it allows tracing the power standards to the direct current standard, that is a SI quantity. This traceability is obtained through the determination of the effective efficiency, usually indicated by € ηe, of a power sens...
متن کاملMicrocalorimetry applications of a surface micromachined bolometer-type thermal probe
This article describes a surface micromachined scanning thermal probe that uses polyimide as the structural material and an embedded thin film metal resistor as the sensing element. The typical dimensions of a fabricated probe are 350 mm in length, 50 mm in width, and 3–10 mm in thickness. The resistor and the scanning tip are formed by sputter-deposited films of nickel and tungsten, which prov...
متن کاملPredicting the response of a submillimeter bolometer to cosmic rays.
Bolometers designed to detect submillimeter radiation also respond to cosmic, gamma, and x rays. Because detectors cannot be fully shielded from such energy sources, it is necessary to understand the effect of a photon or cosmic-ray particle being absorbed. The resulting signal (known as a glitch) can then be removed from raw data. We present measurements using an Americium-241 gamma radiation ...
